A graduate of Pepperdine University, Barnett was a California resident before he moved to Texas to raise his family. As his four sons have begun their own adventures he has found his way back to California and has joined us at Roklin. Barnett has a background in flooring and got there in a rather indirect route. He was an athlete throughout school and college and that eventually led into sales and marketing in the sports industry. “In sports sales / marketing I would at times bring my family to games and events with me but I ended up networking so much during the events I didn’t get to spend near enough time with them.” He chose to move into a field with more fixed hours so he would have a more regular schedule and time for his family. Barnett has also worked in the non-profit arena, with Habitat For Humanity. This range of experience is an advantage because he can have a flexible approach to sales. “I acquired different sales/marketing skills & techniques that definitely help working here, especially on the phone and in researching, pursuing and acquiring new customers. I have dealt with lots of Physical Plant Managers, etc., so I know basically what they are up against.” When asked about his sales style Barnett states that honesty is the best policy. “I feel my success in sales has been due to being very honest, even if the news I have to give is not good for me. You gain the customers respect by always being truthful, and I can sleep at night,” Barnett said. He hangs his hat (not a 10-gallon by the way) in California and did so throughout his youth but after 35 years in Texas he has been told he could call himself a Texan. “I was told that since I have lived in TX longer than anywhere else in my life that I could call myself a Texan. And trust me, that is a big honor to native Texans,” said Barnett. Being a Texan certainly suits his size. They say everything is big in Texas and Barnett is 6’11”. Even though he’s here in California, maybe we will always think of him as a Texan. His answer to the cliché question “Did you ever play sports?” is answered with a nod. “I played basketball starting in 8th grade but baseball since age 4, it was my real love. I was told to make a decision about which sport to follow when I turned 15. I was very tall and there were no curveballs in basketball.” For the record, we did a custom lift on his desk and there is such a thing as extra-tall office chairs. When asked what makes Roklin’s products interesting to him, his answer is simple. “The products we sell help to eliminate a big lifelong pet peeve of mine – potholes. Plus, Roklin’s solutions are quality products that perform as advertised, and there is a huge market out there for everything we sell,” Barnett said.
